West Beach Remediation Update
The PHAI remediation work at the Waterworks West site, which began in late 2022, has reached an exciting milestone for the community. To date, approximately 24,000m³ of soil has been successfully removed, and CNL is now able to return a portion of the site back for community use.
Just in time for Labour Day weekend, the parking lot and trail leading down to the beach will be open for public use starting at end of day on August 30, 2024. We kindly ask that users park in the designated parking lot to keep the beach area clear, since a section is a fire route, and the remainder will be restored as a sensitive ecological zone.
The remediated site has been restored into an open park space, which allows the Municipality to continue to review and plan the implementation of aspects of the Waterfront and Riverwalk Master Plan in the future.
Please note that while a portion of the area is open for enjoyment, construction is still ongoing on the west side of the site, including the creek. This area remains a construction zone but has been placed in a safe state while discussions continue regarding final restoration details. Work on this western portion is expected to begin next year.
While enjoying the area, if you notice any deficiencies or concerns, please let us know through the Report an Issue page on our website at porthope.ca/report-an-issue.
