Burn Permits
The Municipality of Port Hope offers burn permits for controlled open air burning within the Municipality of Port Hope. Only recreational burning is permitted in the urban area. A burn permit is required for all burning in the Municipality of Port Hope and burn permits expire on December 31st of the same year they are issued.
Who can apply for a burn permit?
The Municipality of Port Hope permits open air burns under strict guidelines. Applying for a burn permit is FREE.

Before burning, the owner of the property must obtain a burn permit. A tenant, worker, or family member wishing to apply for a burn permit shall obtain permission from the property owner.

Call 1-844-392-8887 prior to burn to active your permit. Your permit will remain active for 24 hours.

Burn Permits can be obtained online or in-person at Port Hope Station 1 located at 245 Ontario St. during regular business hours.

Follow the regulations in accordance with Burn By-law 79-2023 and the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Regulation 213/07, as amended, Article 2.4.4.4
