Virtual Canada Day Celebrations
For Immediate Release
Monday, June 22, 2020 - Port Hope, ON
To mark the arrival of the official start of summer over the weekend, the Municipality of Port Hope is announcing plans for a first-of-its-kind virtual celebration for Canada Day on July 1.
“Canada Day is going to look a little bit different this year as we cannot host our usual large event downtown, but staff have taken inspiration from the homegrown traditions that our residents have come to expect at our Canada Day celebrations and moved them online,” notes Bob Sanderson, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope. “Throughout this pandemic, I have been impressed and encouraged by the creativity and innovation shown by so many at home. I have no doubt that we will be able to unite online and share this national holiday together.”
Residents are encouraged to visit the Canada Day web page, where there is a full program of activities and opportunities available to unite the community in a virtual Canada Day celebration.
This year’s activities include:
- Singing of the National Anthem from home at 11:00 a.m. sharp, followed by a community-wide cheer
- The Port Hope Pancake Challenge
- A virtual Show N Shine – a new spin on an old tradition
- A free guided yoga session from the comfort of your home
- A virtual fireworks display*
- #frommyporch art challenge, in collaboration with Critical Mass Art
- Photo submission challenges with prizes to be won
A reminder to residents that, per Council resolution, the sale and discharge of fireworks in the Municipality of Port Hope is not permitted this Canada Day holiday.
The Municipality would like to thank its partners and sponsors for their ongoing support and commitment to our Canada Day celebrations.
