The Municipality Receives Funding to Improve Trail Lighting and Paving Along the Riverwalk
Trail enhancements including lighting and paving are in the works for the Port Hope Riverwalk with funding assistance from the Healthy Communities Initiative, a project which was approved in the 2022 Capital Budget and championed by the Waterfront and Riverwalk Working Group to create accessible connections along the Riverwalk.
“We are very grateful to make it through round three of the Healthy Communities Initiative,” notes Julia Snoek, Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture. “These improvements will enhance the safety and accessibility of our trail system as well as usability and enjoyment of the space. The upgrades to the Riverwalk area align with strategic outcomes of the work being completed relating to the Waterfront and Riverwalk Master Plan and is a short-term achievement in a multi-year plan.”
This project includes an accessible connection along the west side of the Ganaraska River, connecting Corbett’s Dam to the Downtown core. The scope of work includes approximately 15 solar lights, which spans approximately 550 metres of new, fully accessible trail. Improvements are being made to the existing Riverside Railway Trail from the Optimist Park entrance south to the Cavan Street sidewalk connection.
This completed project will enhance safe access and connectivity to our natural environment and supports the priority of the Strategic Plan to create enhancements and access to the river for the whole community.
The Healthy Communities Initiative is a $31 million investment from the Government of Canada to transform public spaces in response to COVID-19. The Healthy Communities Initiative provides funding to a broad range of organizations, including local governments, charities, Indigenous communities, and non-profits, for projects, programming and services that help communities to create safe and vibrant public spaces, improve mobility options, and provide innovative digital solutions.
