For Immediate Release
Monday, May 13, 2024 - Port Hope, ON
The Municipality of Port Hope is excited to announce that the reconstruction of the Sylvan Glen Bridge is now complete, and the road has officially reopened for public use. The project, which began at the end of July 2023, has been completed ahead of schedule and on budget, demonstrating the dedication and efficiency of our staff and construction team.
"The reopening of the Sylvan Glen Bridge is a testament to our community's commitment to progress and preservation,” notes Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “This project not only provides a safer and more efficient connection for our residents but also honours our community’s rich history. We look forward to seeing the bridge serve the community for generations to come.”
In addition to reopening the road, access to the Sylvan Glen Conservation Area and the Ganaraska Trail is also fully restored, offering visitors a seamless return to nature.
The original bridge, built in 1921, was a significant historical structure. To honour this heritage, a section of the original railing has been preserved. At a future date, staff plan to install a commemorative plaque at the Conservation Area, ensuring that the bridge's legacy remains alive for future generations to appreciate.
We look forward to welcoming the community back to enjoy the newly completed bridge, the conservation area, and the Ganaraska Trail once more.
