Summer Safety Reminders
Summer is a time for family road trips, outdoor fun in the sun and hopefully great weather. This week we have seen some very hot temperatures in Port Hope. With summer activities in full swing, Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services wants to provide some simple reminders to prepare for safe summer days:
- If you are visiting the cottage or trailer, test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms monthly. Pack a new smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm and extra batteries in case they need replacement.
- Ensure you have an emergency preparedness kit in case of incidents such as power outages and extreme weather events.
- Only use BBQs outdoors. Keep them away from anything flammable like the house, deck railings, fences, camping tents and plants.
- If going out on a boat, always wear a life jacket and keep your safety supplies with you.
- Never leave a child unnattended in the water.
- When working or playing outdoors, take a lot of breaks and drink a lot of water.
- If you must smoke, do so outside. Keep a large can with water nearby so cigarette butts can be safely discarded. Do not throw your cigarette butts out car windows.
- Do not leave your child or pet unattended in a vehicle. Vehicles become very hot very quickly and this is not safe for any length of time.
