Statement on the Rose Glen Road Industrial Fire
On April 9, 2025, a fire broke out at an industrial chemical plant in our community. It was a high-risk situation that required an extensive and coordinated response. All three fire stations in our Municipality were deployed, which included 14 apparatus and over 40 of our firefighters to contain and suppress the blaze, preventing what could have been a far more serious incident.
Mutual aid played a key role in this effort. Members from Cobourg Fire Department assisted at the scene with their aerial truck and provided coverage for Fire Station 1. Hamilton Township Fire Department provided additional coverage for our Fire Stations 2 and 3, and Alnwick/Haldimand Fire Department brought the County Air Trailer to support air bottle refills. Cameco Corporation contributed drone support and Haz-Mat team expertise to manage concerns from the chemical facility. The Spills Action Centre, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, and GFL Contractors were also engaged to address environmental remediation.
Mayor Hankivsky expressed gratitude for the exceptional leadership of our Fire Chief and the commitment of the fire department team:
“These past weeks have tested our community, with the ice storm and now this fire. Through both events, our Fire Chief and firefighters have demonstrated professionalism, skill, and care. Their dedication has been crucial in ensuring the safety of our residents and mitigating risks to our community.”
The Municipality of Port Hope extends its thanks to the Port Hope Firefighters and to all responding agencies and organizations for their teamwork and expertise during this challenging incident. It is through collaborative efforts that we continue to protect and support our community in times of need.
