Safety Reminders Amid Power Outages
The Municipality of Port Hope reminds residents to stay safe as power restoration efforts continue. While many have had their electricity restored, some areas remain without power.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
With increased use of alternative heating and power sources, we urge everyone to remain vigilant about carbon monoxide (CO) safety:
- Ensure your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms are working. If the alarm sounds, evacuate immediately and call 911.
- Never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space, such as a garage or porch. Generators should be placed outside, away from doors, windows, and vents.
- Do not use outdoor grills, stoves, or other fuel-burning appliances indoors, as they can produce dangerous levels of CO.
Safe Heating & Cooking
- If using a fireplace or wood stove, ensure proper ventilation and never leave an open flame unattended.
- Only use space heaters that are approved for indoor use and keep them at least three feet away from flammable materials.
- Never use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
