Port Hope Tourism Services Delivery Expanded
As part of the 2023 budget, Municipality of Port Hope Council committed additional funding in the amount of $125,000 towards Tourism initiatives including a new digital strategy for Tourism in Port Hope.
“Tourism and economic development were key areas of focus for this Council during the 2023 Budget deliberations,” states Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “We know that tourism is a great way to grow the local economy. We need to increase and enhance our tourism tools and tactics to expand our tourism strategy, unleash our potential as a travel destination, and aid in our economic recovery.”
To align with the delivery of tourism services in neighbouring municipalities, Port Hope has committed to a strategy that moves away from a bricks and mortar Visitor Information Centre and towards a digital delivery of tourism services and tools. This approach is in line with industry standards across the province and allows for tourism funding to be used more effectively.
The current Visitor Information Centre lease agreement expires in November of 2023; however, the Centre’s physical presence will come to an end in March. In 2022, the Regional Tourism Organization 8 (RTO8) provided funding to the Municipality through the Tourism Relief Fund. This funding was used to purchase digital information kiosks that are used for self-service tourism information. Potential locations for the kiosks include 20 Queen Street (the Capitol Theatre), the Mary J. Benson Branch of the Port Hope Public Library, as well as the opportunity to install kiosks in the rural area of the community.
The new strategy for tourism will begin to take shape almost immediately, with the installation of the digital kiosks already being organized and with new kiosk sites coming on board beginning as soon as next month.
