Wednesday, May 8, 2024 - Port Hope, ON
The official groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated Walton Street Reconstruction project took place today, marking the formal start of significant infrastructure improvements in downtown Port Hope. Residents, business owners, and municipal officials gathered to witness this important milestone, as Mayor Hankivsky alongside Council and staff shared the vision for a stronger, more vibrant downtown core.
The ceremony featured speeches from the Mayor Olena Hankivsky, Chief Administrative Officer Candice White, and Director of Works and Engineering Jeanette Davidson, highlighting the significance of this project in enhancing the accessibility, safety, and visual appeal of the area. They also emphasized the importance of community unity and resilience during the construction phase.
"We are building more than just a road—we are building a better future for all who live and work here," said Mayor Hankivsky. "Let us come together to support one another, continue to shop local, and navigate these changes with kindness and understanding. We are all part of this journey, and the results will benefit us all."
In a significant move to support residents and businesses throughout the project, the Mayor shared that public transit is now free for Routes A and B in Port Hope, during the entire reconstruction period. This measure aims to ease travel challenges and encourage community members to continue visiting and supporting the downtown businesses.
"Our downtown businesses are the heartbeat of our community, and they will remain open throughout this project. The free transit initiative ensures that everyone has easy access to our wonderful local shops and services," added the Mayor.
The CAO reinforced the message that the Municipality is committed to ensuring minimal disruptions while enhancing the long-term quality of life for residents and visitors alike. "We are working diligently to keep the project on track and maintain open lines of communication with all stakeholders. Together, we will make this a success."

Background
The Walton Street Reconstruction project represents a critical upgrade to Port Hope's main street, focusing on repairing outdated infrastructure and enhancing accessibility. It tackles crucial enhancements to old water mains, sanitary sewers, and expanding capacity for storm sewers that have become inadequate over time.
Although replacing these underground systems presents challenges, it also offers a chance to rebuild the roadway and beautify the streetscape.
Phase 1 of the Walton Street Reconstruction was successfully completed in 2023. This initial phase encompassed the section of Walton Street stretching from Pine Street to Church Street.
