Municipality of Port Hope Celebrates Dedicated Community at Annual Civic Awards Ceremony

An evening dedicated to honour and celebrate Port Hope citizenry was held at the Capitol Theatre this evening at the 35th annual Civic Awards ceremony.
“The Civic Awards program reminds us about the meaning of community and kinship and shines a light on those who go above and beyond for Port Hope and its people,” notes Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “Port Hope has a rich history rooted in volunteerism and care for one another and I am proud to stand with my Council colleagues to formally acknowledge and thank our citizens for the selfless work that they do to advance and enhance our community.”
The Civic Awards is a nomination-based program that celebrates community members for their exceptional contributions and/or achievements, bringing honour and/or enrichment to the Municipality of Port Hope. Categories include Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Athletics, Community Services, Environment, Inspiration Philanthropy and the Outstanding Youth and Outstanding Citizen Awards.
This year’s Outstanding Youth Award was presented to Maeve Burns. The Outstanding Citizen award was presented to Jeff Lees. Both recipients embody a lifestyle of volunteerism that serves as an inspiration to us all.
It was a full house at the ceremony where awards were presented in all nine categories. The program featured a selection of local entertainers, such as the multi-talented Brian Bracken, the local indie pop-artist YasHa, the talented dance duo Jasmine and Bella Wilson and the award-winning baton twirler Charlotte Grimshaw. York Bell Smith emceed the celebration and was joined by members of Port Hope Council to present the awards.
Following the ceremony, the celebration in the Capitol Theatre lobby, where an assortment of local businesses (Santorini's Restaurant, Haute Goat, Jim's Pizzeria, Happenstance Bakery & Coffee Roastery, Frosted Flour and the Beamish House Pub) provided refreshments.
The Civic Awards Advisory Committee, a committee of Council, meets regularly throughout the year to coordinate the recognition program and host the annual award ceremony on behalf of Council. The Committee is comprised of the following members: Keri Kroeger, Dave Kroeger, Sandra Ging, Sue Knox, Alexandra Byers, Kendra Simmons, Councillor Adam Pearson, recording secretary Rebecca Persaud, and staff representative Jeannie Maidens.
All nominators are thanked for their thoughtful submissions to this annual program, Nomination intake for the next Port Hope Civic Awards will open in December.
