MTO Preliminary Work Underway for Upcoming Bridge Replacement
The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has begun preliminary work in advance of a major infrastructure project that includes improvements to the Choate Road and Ganaraska River Bridges.
This extensive project is expected to take place over the next six construction seasons (May to December). The Municipality has heard from residents in the immediate area and has been advocating for more details on the expected traffic impacts along Choate Road. Staff continue to push for additional information to support local residents. Once the tender process is finalized and the contractor is mobilized, residents will be notified in advance of any traffic impacts. The Municipality of Port Hope is ready to help share impact and road closure details as they are confirmed by the MTO but does not have that information at this time.
Please note that this project does not include interchange alterations. Although Council recently received a presentation on potential future interchange reconstruction, that project is still in the planning phases with MTO and not finalized. There is no project timeline for such work, and it would not be anticipated for many years following final design work.
The recent tree removal along Highway 401 from the County Road 28 interchange west to Cranberry Road is in preparation for the project and outside the Municipality's approval authority.
For the duration of this project, emergency services will ensure that road and bridge closures are communicated to first responders, and alternate routes will be developed to maintain effective emergency response in the affected areas. School bus route impacts will be addressed by the MTO directly to the relevant school boards. The Municipality is awaiting further information for future years with respect to any impacts to the annual Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny race. The race will not be impacted in 2025.
For project updates and further details, residents are encouraged to monitor communications from the Ministry of Transportation. A dedicated website has been established by the project consultants at hwy401porthopeea.com. Please note that this site was created to provide information related to the project planning and preliminary design and it may not include future construction updates.
