In-person event planned for Canada Day 2022
For Immediate Release - Wednesday, June 8, 2022 - Port Hope
After two years of modified programming, the Municipality of Port Hope is gearing up to celebrate Canada Day with in-person events and activities this July 1.
“The return of in-person Canada Day celebrations is anticipated by many this year,” notes Bob Sanderson, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope. “Together with our community partners, we’re hosting an impressive festival of music, food, and culture, and welcoming our community to gather safely once again. Masks are not required at this event, but we respect everyone’s personal choices and comfort levels when it comes to wearing personal protective equipment at our events and activities.”
Weekend activities include the return of traditional favourites such as the Canada Day parade, party in the park, wagon rides, and live music.
“While July 1 celebrations are a tradition for many, it is important to recognize that Canada Day is not observed by all people in our country,” continues Mayor Sanderson. “Reflecting on the origins of our land and the unique and heritage culture of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples who have shaped our country is imperative for all Canadians.”
New this year is the ‘Penny for a Thought’ project, a community engagement activity aimed to help connect community members of all ages. In partnership with local artist, Leslie Smith, the goal is to collect words of wisdom from Port Hope locals and hand out these phrases, along with a Canadian penny, at the event in Memorial Park. Residents are invited to submit their thoughts or short, sage words of wisdom using the webform. Submissions will be collected until June 15.
