Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny is Back with a Modified Event for 2024 – Call for Participants
In partnership, the Municipality of Port Hope and the Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny Committee announce the annual call for event participants. This year’s event is slated for Saturday, April 13, 2024, with modifications due to the ongoing Sylvan Glen Bridge construction, impacting the Crazy Craft category. For 2024, participants have the opportunity to explore the new Inflatable category and adventurers can still tackle the full 16-kilometer route in a canoe or kayak, launching from Canton.
"This annual event is a cornerstone of Port Hope's identity, drawing participants and spectators from near and far,” notes Olena Hankivsky, Mayor for the Municipality of Port Hope. “While we navigate these changes, safety remains paramount. I eagerly anticipate another memorable day for our community as we watch participants in the new category and spend time with neighbours in Fannyville."
The new Inflatable category offers a shorter river run option from Optimist Park, promising bitesize adventure with big-time fun. Whether you're a seasoned participant or new to the event, the Inflatable category provides an opportunity to join the race without the need to construct a complex craft. An inflatable (or floatie) is a soft-sided or rubber vessel that is inflated with air, such as tubes, air mattresses or even or giant unicorns. This category is an introduction to the event, allowing participants to dip their toes into the race experience.
Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny is a cherished tradition in Port Hope, commemorating the community's resilience following the 1980 flood. As always, participants will conclude in “Fannyville”, the outdoor event village, set up to host various food, drink and merchant vendors, on-stage entertainment, children’s activities, and live commentary, culminating in an award presentation.
“We are excited to welcome everyone back into Fannyville and can’t wait to see the courageous participants on the water this April,” notes Barry Adamson and Barrileigh Price event Co-Chairs. “Although we too will miss the Crazy Crafts this year, we are proud to maintain event delivery to keep the Float Your Fanny tradition going. We are calling on the public to get their canoes, floaties and costumes ready so we can all have some fun! Preparation is key to a great day – we appreciate everyone who comes out with Ganny spirit.”
Registration for participants is now open on the Float Your Fanny website: floatyourfanny.ca. All participants are reminded to carefully review registration information to prepare accordingly for the smooth launch of your vessel and safe travels on the fast and chilly waters of the Ganaraska. The event plan has been reviewed in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to uphold policies for the safety and sustainability of fish and wildlife habitats in the river.
As always, the Municipality of Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services, alongside community emergency services partners, are actively involved in safety planning and will be present during the event. Participants and spectators must follow protocols and remain mindful and respectful of each other along the riverbank. The health and safety of the community remains top priority for event organizers and the Municipality.
While the event is scheduled for April 13, river conditions will be monitored leading up to event day. If deemed necessary, the event date may be rescheduled for April 20, 2024.
