Flags Lowered to Honour the Passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
It is with heavy hearts that we learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at the age of 96 years.
“The Municipality of Port Hope adds its condolences to those being offered by Canadians across the Country to King Charles III, the Queen Consort and the Royal Family at this time,” states Bob Sanderson, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope. “Her Majesty’s service to Canada was admirable and Her legacy will live on in our hearts and history.”
Canada’s Head of State, H.M. Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning British monarch. Her Majesty became Queen in 1952, at the age of 25, and presided over the country and the Commonwealth, including Canada, for seven decades. Those 70 years as monarch were recognized during this year's Platinum Jubilee events. This past August, the Municipality recognized and celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee with a visit from The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
In 1959, H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and H.R.H Prince Philip were guests at the home of then Governor-General Vincent Massey. During their stay at his estate in Canton, they joined the congregation for morning prayer at St. Mark’s Anglican Church on King Street. Mementos of that visit include a signed portrait of the royal couple and the Queen’s signature in the guest book.
To honour the long- and well-established relationship between Canada and H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, the flags at municipal facilities have been lowered to the half-mast position.
A book of condolences will be available at Town Hall beginning on Monday, September 12, 2022. Municipality of Port Hope residents are invited to sign the book to offer their sympathies.
