Council Adopts New Deputy Mayor Schedule and Appoints Todd Attridge
At their recent meeting, Municipality of Port Hope Council amended the Procedural By-law to appoint the Deputy Mayor on a rotating basis for the 2022-2026 term, installing Todd Attridge as the first Deputy Mayor of this term of Council.
“I’m very excited to be this term’s first Deputy Mayor and I believe firmly in the distribution of responsibility and authority,” states Deputy Mayor Attridge. “During the election, I ran on a platform of greater communication, cooperation, and transparency in municipal government, and the rotating Deputy Mayor role is a small step towards achieving that goal. The change to a rotating Deputy Mayor schedule demonstrates that Members of Council, through actions and words, are here to serve the entire community and are invested in its success.”
During deliberation of the proposed amendment, both Councillors Andrews and Collins removed their names from consideration under the rotating appointment schedule. As such, Council formalized the appointment schedule of the Deputy Mayor for the term as follows:
- Todd Attridge – Appointed as Deputy Mayor for 2023
- Claire Holloway Wadhwani – Appointed as Deputy Mayor for 2024
- Vicki Mink – Appointed as Deputy Mayor for 2025
- Adam Pearson – Appointed as Deputy Mayor for 2026
The Deputy Mayor is not a legislated role within the Municipal Act, but many municipalities across Ontario and Canada elect or appoint the position as part of their Council composition. The Deputy Mayor’s role is to act as Mayor when the Mayor is absent or if the position of Mayor is vacant.
“I am pleased with the Council decision to introduce a rotating schedule for the Deputy Mayor position,” adds Mayor Hankivsky. “This change aligns with a growing trend in municipalities to promote fairness and equity and speaks to the tone that this Council is setting in our first few months of the term. I know that Todd’s strong leadership in Year One of the schedule will greatly benefit this Council and community.”
