Betty Collins Tribute
The Municipality of Port Hope is saddened to learn of the passing of Ms. Elizabeth (Betty) Collins, former Mayor of the Town of Port Hope, who died on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, in her 89th year.
Ms. Collins blazed a historic trail for women in politics in this community. First elected as a Councillor in 1988, she was acclaimed Reeve in 1991 and, soon thereafter, became the first female Mayor of the Town of Port Hope in 1993. Ms. Collins was also the first Chairperson of the Port Hope Police Services Board; a title that required a swift revision from ‘Chairman’ for the first time since the position was created in the mid-1800’s.
Ms. Collins will be remembered as a passionate member of this community who gave back endlessly throughout her life.
Her civic duty legacy lives on in her family, who remain engaged in municipal politics and community activism.
In honour of Ms. Collins and her dedicated service to the community, the flags at Town Hall have been lowered to the half-mast position.
