Steps to become a Fitness Instructor

Fitness Instructor Requirements
 
Certification as a general fitness instructor with an accredited organization
Certification as a general fitness instructor with CanFit Pro, CFES Certification, Seniors Fitness Instructor Course, etc. If you decide to teach a specialty class, you'll also need a specialty certification (such as Yoga, Pilates, Dance, Zumba). This requirement will need to be done prior to applying. 
Standard First Aid, CPR “C” with AED
Standard First Aid, CPR “C” with AED is required. You cannot apply without this requirement.
HIGH FIVE ®: Principles of Healthy Aging Certificate
This is a certification that we use in the majority of our programming and we will provide training. You can apply without this requirement.
Get your required teaching hours
We'll assist you in obtaining any required teaching hours you still need. You can apply without this requirement.

Program Instructor Requirements
 
Certifications or experience in the area you will be teaching such as: drawing, watercolours, sculpture, language
This requirement will need to be done prior to applying. 
Standard First Aid, CPR “C” with AED
Standard First Aid, CPR “C” with AED is required.  You cannot apply without this requirement.
HIGH FIVE ®: Principles of Healthy Aging Certificate
This is a certification that we use in the majority of our programming and we will provide training. You can apply without this requirement.

Specialty Instructor Requirements
 
Post secondary diploma preferred in recreation, sports administration or specialty area of study or experience 
Experience teaching in the specialty area
NCCP Coaching certifications in a particular sport is preferred
You can acquire this certification through the Coaching Association of Canada
Standard First Aid, CPR “C” with AED 
Standard First Aid, CPR “C” with AED is required. You cannot apply without this requirement.

This is a certification that we use in the majority of our programming and we will provide training. You can apply without this requirement.
Coaching Hours.

Lifeguard Requirements
 
Bronze Medallion
If you do not have this qualification, we offer Bronze Medallion courses for a fee. See upcoming Bronze Medallion schedule so you can get qualified! This requirement will need to be done prior to applying. 
Bronze Cross
If you do not have this qualification, we offer Bronze Cross courses for a fee. See upcoming Bronze Cross schedule so you can get qualified! This requirement will need to be done prior to applying.

National Lifeguard

Swim Instructor Requirements
 
Bronze Medallion
If you do not have this qualification, we offer Bronze Medallion courses for a fee. See upcoming Bronze Medallion schedule so you can get qualified! This requirement will need to be done prior to applying. 
Bronze Cross
If you do not have this qualification, we offer Bronze Cross courses for a fee. See upcoming Bronze Cross schedule so you can get qualified! This requirement will need to be done prior to applying.

Standard First Aid, CPR “C” with AED is required.  You cannot apply without this requirement.
Water Safety Instructor Courses (Lifesaving Instructor) 

To qualify for teaching, you'll need to complete at least one of the following courses. We offer two courses based on the level of instruction you aim to pursue. Choose the course that best matches your teaching goals. This requirement will need to be done prior to applying. 

  • Lifesaving Swim Instructor: The initial course prepares candidates to teach and evaluate basic swim strokes and related skills. We offer this course for a fee, see upcoming Lifesaving Swim Instructor Courses
  • Lifesaving Instructor: This is the second course, which prepares candidates to teach: Canadian Swim Patrol Program, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Lifesaving Fitness, Distinction Basic and Emergency First Aid, and CPR-A, CPR-B and CPR-C. We offer this course for a fee, see upcoming Lifesaving Instructor Courses
