Municipality of Port Hope Welcomes New Deputy Fire Chief

Friday, April 10, 2020 - Port Hope, ON

The Municipality of Port Hope is pleased to announce that Daniel Smith has joined Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services (PHFES) as Deputy Fire Chief, effective April 6, 2020.

“I am very pleased to welcome Deputy Chief Smith to the Municipality of Port Hope,” notes Mayor Bob Sanderson. “We look forward to the contributions he will bring to serve the citizens of the Municipality and the members of Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services.”

Deputy Fire Chief Smith is in his 20th year of service. Dedicated to lifelong learning, he is a certified Fire Officer and holds a Diploma in Fire Protection Engineering, an Executive Diploma in Municipal Management, as well as certifications in fire service leadership, fire service administration and fire and explosive investigation. He is also presently completing his Bachelor of Emergency Management through Cape Breton University.

“We are excited to have Deputy Chief Smith join our team of dedicated members, especially at a time like this in our world history,” adds Fire Chief C. Ryan Edgar, Director of Fire and Emergency Services. “Daniel has a stellar reputation and brings the skills, talents, and leadership needed to continue to advance PHFES into the future. I am confident that his experience and knowledge in the fire service will be a great addition to both our family and to our community partners.”

Deputy Smith has been tasked to assist the Fire Chief with the leadership, supervision and administration of over 70 dedicated members. He is also responsible for the operational divisions of the department.

“I am extremely excited to join Chief Edgar in leading such a professional organization that is known to provide and exceptional public safety service,” states Deputy Fire Daniel Smith. “I am looking forward to becoming acquainted with the staff and becoming a part of the community.”

Deputy Chief Smith is socially distancing, as is all municipal administrative staff, and is working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He will return to the Fire Administration Office, located at 245 Ontario Street in Port Hope, once regular operations resume.
