Safely Reopening Buildings

As the Government of Ontario begins to phase-in the reopening of the economy, the Municipality would like to remind business owners and operators to flush their water taps thoroughly upon reopening.

Facilities that have not been used on a regular basis are likely to have minimal to no chlorine residual in the water, resulting in stagnant water. This could cause pathogenic growth, such as Legionella.

For facilities that have not been in use, municipal water and wastewater staff urge business owners and operators to ensure that the facilities are flushed (all taps) once per week for 15 to 30 minutes. Additionally, it is recommended that hot water tanks are drained, and the lines are flushed for 30 minutes prior to the reopening of the building.

Business owners and operators are encouraged to review the Safely Reopening Buildings Fact Sheet, prepared and distributed by the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association. This guide provides general instruction for flushing and cleaning water systems.
