Municipality of Port Hope 2017 ‘Mayor for the Day’ Contest

Mayor for the day logoIn celebration of Local Government Week from October 15 - 21, 2017, the Municipality of Port Hope is encouraging students to get involved in their local government. We are hosting a ‘Mayor for the Day’ contest which provides the opportunity for youth to build awareness about the vital role local government plays in the community.

The ‘Mayor for the Day’ contest initiative is open to students in Grades 7 and 8. The contest encourages young people to think about public service and future community leadership. This is an opportunity for youth to submit an idea to the Municipal council on how to make our community a better place to live. This will increase student interest and awareness.

The winner will have their picture taken with the Mayor, tour our facilities, spend the morning with the Mayor, officially open a regular council meeting and win a pizza party for their classroom!

To enter the contest, students must submit a one page letter answering the following questions:
1. Why would you like to be the Mayor for a day?
2. What concerns do you see in the community and what changes would you wish to implement if you were the Mayor?
3. What are the most important programs for youth in the Municipality?
4. What do like best about Port Hope?

Please submit your entry form and a letter to Mayor Bob Sanderson (500 words max.) answering the questions above.
