The Port Hope Legion Branch 30 has long identified the desire to enhance and upgrade the Cenotaph in Memorial Park. Staff have been working with members of the Legion with respect to the design and costs associated with a potential fundraising campaign for this project.

The upgrades proposed include the following:

  • Stone knee wall around the perimeter within the existing layout with steps leading to the monument;
  • Accessible ramp to the monument with a stone pathway from Augusta Street;
  • Interlocking brick and walkway around the base and new sidewalk to Queen Street;
  • Interlocking bricks will have the potential to be engraved as part of the fundraising campaign similar to the Canton Cenotaph and Rotary Park concepts;
  • Eight 25’ flag poles with solar accent lighting;
  • Improvements to existing lighting;
  • New tree and shrub plantings (in cooperation with the Hero’s Highway Tree Planting Program).

As such, at the Committee of the Whole Meeting on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, Council supported the recommendation from Staff that the conceptual plan for the proposed refurbishment and upgrades to the Cenotaph in Memorial Park be posted for public consultation commencing August 7, 2019 until September 22, 2019, with a report summarizing comments and feedback to be presented and considered at a future Committee of the Whole meeting.
